Welcome to Arequipa, a colonial gem known for its architecture, buildings crafted from white volcanic stone from the surrounding volcanoes. From trekking the volcanoes to exploring one of the world's deepest canyons, there's no shortage of excitement here.

In our guide, we'll provide you with all the essential information you need to make the most of your time in Arequipa, including tips on both the city and day trips! Get ready for a journey into the white city!

How to get to Arequipa?

The most convenient way to reach Arequipa is by flying from Lima. With its numerous direct flights, Lima serves as the primary departure point for travelers heading to Arequipa. A one-way flight can be a cheap option if booked far enough in advance, both major airlines like LATAM and SKY operate this route. If you're already exploring Peru, it's worth noting that direct flights to Arequipa are also available from Cusco, Piura, Trujillo, and Tarapoto.

By Bus:

For budget-conscious travelers like us, taking the bus is a wallet-friendly option. Although it's a longer journey, typically lasting around 17 hours from Lima, bus fares are generally cheaper. Plus, you may not need to take such a long ride, as many backpackers like us, like to break up the journey with stops along the way. We used BusBud to help find all of our routes! There are several noteworthy destinations between Lima and Arequipa, such as Huacachina, Paracas, and Nazca, each offering unique experiences worth exploring and each just a bus ride away.

Nestled atop a hill in the Los Sauces neighborhood, this small plaza offers a truly amazing view of this Peruvian city. From here, you'll marvel at the sea of white-washed buildings that make Arequipa so iconic. Towering volcanoes provide a striking backdrop, serving as a poignant reminder of nature's power. Don't forget to indulge in a delicious Queso Helado too (cheese ice cream, but don't worry, there's no real cheese involved!) perfect for cooling off in the midday heat.

The Plaza De Armas

The Plaza de Armas in Arequipa is almost like the centre of Arequipa. With meticulously manicured gardens, a central fountain, and the surrounding architecture such as the cathedral, crafted from the renowned sillar volcanic rock, this square is really quite beautiful. Beyond its photogenic appeal, the Plaza de Armas offers an array of traditional restaurants and terrace cafes where you can try the local cuisine. There are also many tourist offices here, such as Marie Belen, where we booked our tour to the Colca Canyon.

Mercado San Camilo

The huge market that sells everything you can imagine!

Mercado San Camilo is known as one of Southern Peru's largest markets. Whether you're craving fresh fruits or feeling adventurous enough to try guinea pig—a local delicacy—this market has it all. We actually ate here every lunch time, thinking we were eating chicken sandwiches... to later find out they were actually pigs head sandwiches, but hey, they were pretty good! Admission is free, allowing you to explore at your leisure. The market operates daily from 6:00 am to 7:30 pm and is only a 10-15 minute walk from the Plaza de Armas.

Santa Catalina Monastery

A city within the city

Santa Catalina Monastery is like a city within the city. The vibrant blue and red houses and picturesque courtyards transport you to another place. It'll be easy to forget you were just strolling through Arequipa's streets moments ago! Founded in the 16th century by wealthy widow Maria de Guzman, the Santa Catalina Monastery housed upper class women who led a secluded, prayerful life within its walls. Despite its seemingly restrictive nature, being a nun here was prestigious, with families paying hefty dowries to secure their acceptance. It was believed that having a daughter in the monastery could bring redemption for their sins. At its peak, the monastery was home to over 450 nuns, but today only about 20 remain, cherishing their privacy and this particular part is inaccessible to visitors.

Mundo Alpaca

A must-visit among Arequipa's free attractions is Mundo Alpaca, Alpaca World. While the adorable alpacas steal the spotlight, you can also discover the ancient art of fiber weaving. From pre-Incan ancestral techniques on the backstrap loom to exploring museums showcasing textile traditions, Mundo Alpaca offers a fascinating journey through centuries-old practices. It's not just about colorful ponchos and sweaters; it's a cultural immersion celebrating heritage and craftsmanship, making it an invaluable experience in the city.

Visit Museo Santuarios Andinos to encounter the mummy of Juanita. This museum showcases anthropological treasures, with Juanita, a 12-year-old Inca girl sacrificed in the 1450s, taking center stage. Despite centuries passing, her impeccably preserved body astounds visitors. Juanita's discovery is a testament to the power of nature; as a glacier receded, her tomb emerged, revealing her resting place after over 500 years. This extraordinary find has cemented its place as one of the top attractions in Arequipa!
