Applying for a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) in New Zealand

Eligibility Criteria: Before diving into the application process, let's ensure you meet the basic eligibility requirements:

  1. Age: You must be between 18 and 35 years old (for UK citizens) and 18 to 30 years old (for Irish citizens) at the time of application.

  2. Nationality: You must hold a valid UK or Irish passport.

  3. Funds: You'll need to show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in New Zealand (currently a minimum of NZ$350 a month or NZ$4200 for 12 months)

  4. Health Insurance: You'll need comprehensive travel insurance for the duration of your stay. We have been using SafetyWing for the last few years. It's one of the only insurances we have found that really take nomad lifestyles into consideration. SafetyWing was founded by digital nomads who understand the unique needs of travelers like us. They've tailored their insurance to cater specifically to the challenges faced by working holiday travelers, such as: you can take out an insurance policy even after you've left your home country, during any part of your trip AND you don't have to commit to more than a month at a time! Bonus! With SafetyWing, you're covered for a wide range of situations too, including medical emergencies, lost luggage, travel delays, and even evacuation during unforeseen crises. With coverage over 180 countries in the world, and even coverage for little trips back to your home country, SafetyWing is a travel companion you can rely on!

Application Process

  1. Create an Immigration New Zealand Account: Visit the official Immigration New Zealand website and create an account. This will be your hub for all visa-related processes.

  2. Complete the Online Application: Log in to your account and complete the Working Holiday Visa application form. You'll need to provide personal information, travel plans, and financial details.

  3. Pay the Visa Fee: As of our last update (September 2023), the visa application fee for a UK or Irish citizen was from NZ$420. Check the official website for the most up-to-date fees.

  4. Submit Required Documents: Upload scanned copies of your passport, passport-sized photos, and other requested documents.

  5. Biometrics and Health Examinations: Depending on your circumstances, you may need to provide biometric information, such as fingerprints and photographs, at a Visa Application Centre and may also be required to do a medical examination. If applying for a 2 year visa, a medical examination with bloods will be required.

  6. Police Certificate: For those who are able to stay over 24 months, a Police Certificate will be required. This certificate serves to verify your criminal history and ensures that you meet New Zealand's visa eligibility criteria. The certificate will be requested to confirm that you have no serious criminal convictions that could potentially affect your stay in New Zealand. Be aware that the process of obtaining a police certificate can take time, so it's advisable to start this procedure well in advance of your WHV application.

  7. Wait for Processing: Visa processing times can vary but typically take around 18 working days. It's advisable to apply well in advance of your planned travel date.

Medical Examination Requirements:

In some cases, applicants for the Working Holiday Visa (WHV) may be required to undergo a medical examination as part of their visa application process. The need for a medical examination typically arises if you intend to work in certain industries or roles that are considered high-risk for public health or safety. These may include healthcare, child education, or agricultural sectors. The medical examination may include a thorough assessment of your general health, including checks for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) and other conditions that may pose a risk to the New Zealand population. Additionally, it may involve X-rays and blood tests to ensure you meet the necessary health standards to work in these fields while safeguarding the well-being of the New Zealand community. If a medical examination is required, you will be notified during the application process, and you must comply with the specified procedures. Be sure to check the official Immigration New Zealand website for detailed information on medical examination requirements, including where to schedule the examination and any associated costs.

Pro Tips for Your WHV Journey:

Before you embark on your New Zealand adventure, here are a few important rules and handy tips to keep in mind. First, one unique aspect of New Zealand's WHV program is that you generally don't need to provide proof of an onward ticket when you arrive in the country. This flexibility allows you to explore freely and make travel plans as you go, which is especially beneficial for the adventurous spirit.

However, it's crucial to remember that your WHV comes with responsibilities. You are expected to abide by New Zealand's laws and regulations while enjoying your stay. This includes adhering to any job-related conditions specified in your visa, maintaining valid health insurance, and respecting the local culture and environment.

Opening a Bank Account:

For a seamless financial experience during your New Zealand adventure, it's a wise move to consider opening a bank account upon your arrival. While numerous banking options are available, some of the most favored choices among fellow travelers often include ANZ, BNZ, and Westpac. You also need a bank account before you can apply for your IRD number which keeps track of the tax you pay and helps make sure you pay the right amount or get the right entitlements. However, when we attempted to set up a traditional bank account, we encountered significant delays due to extensive backlogs, resulting in weeks of waiting. Recognizing the urgency of having an account for employment purposes, we explored an alternative solution: Wise. Wise is an international travel card that can be utilized in most countries and allows you to establish an account in your country of residence, such as New Zealand. This means you can receive your salary and use it as if it were a regular New Zealand account. We found this option particularly appealing because it provides the convenience of instant currency conversion, eliminating concerns about the fate of your funds when it's time to move on from the country. Ready to simplify your finances and enjoy the flexibility of Wise? Sign up with Wise and you too can effortlessly manage your finances while exploring the world!

Obtaining Your IRD Number:

To work and pay taxes in New Zealand, you'll need an IRD number. The process is straightforward: once you arrive in New Zealand, you can apply for your IRD number online through the official Inland Revenue Department website. You'll need to provide personal information, such as your passport details and visa information. Once your application is processed, you'll receive your IRD number, which is essential for tax purposes, opening a bank account, and managing your financial affairs while in the country. It's advisable to apply for your IRD number as soon as you arrive to ensure a smooth transition into work and life in New Zealand.

Choosing a phone plan:

Staying connected while on your New Zealand adventure is crucial, and having a dependable mobile phone plan can make all the difference. Among the preferred service providers are Skinny, One, and Spark. When we made our choice (as of September 2023), Skinny stood out as the top pick, offering the most budget-friendly option with an unlimited data plan priced at just $40 per month. It's worth noting, however, that compared to our experiences in Asia, phone plans and service in New Zealand tend to be pricier and can sometimes be less consistent. Nevertheless, a reliable mobile plan ensures you can keep in touch with fellow travelers and potential employers, making your journey more enjoyable and productive!

With the right mix of preparation and spontaneity, your Working Holiday Visa for New Zealand can be the gateway to unforgettable experiences, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of this remarkable country. So, pack your bags, chase your dreams, and embark on the adventure of a lifetime!
